Emirates has announced the completion of the first installation of Starlink aboard one of its flagship Airbus A380 aircraft.
The Dubai-based airline reported its first A380 equipped with Starlink returned to Dubai after the installation and certification was completed in Newquay, United Kingdom. Onboard, three Starlink antennas along with additional wireless access points are installed on the A380 which enables access to Starlink’s high-speed, low-latency internet for passengers and crew.
According to Emirates, the installation of Starlink on the double-decker A380 presented “unique engineering challenges and opportunities." The installation onboard the superjumbo is capable of delivering more than 2 Gbps of total aircraft bandwidth across the cabin.
“Compared with the Emirates Boeing 777, the Emirates A380 features additional wireless access points and a third antenna to deliver an enhanced connectivity experience for its higher passenger capacity. Optimised inter‑deck integration supports a seamless Wi‑Fi experience, with customers able to enjoy high speeds depending on usage and device capability.”
Emirates reports that over 650,000 passengers have flown on the 25 Boeing 777-300ER equipped with Starlink.
More installations of Starlink are scheduled onboard for more aircraft on Emirates’ fleet at the airline’s Engineering facilities in Dubai. Along with being able to browse the internet, stream content, play video games online, and do work using personal devices, future enhancements will include Live TV streaming over Starlink on personal devices before later integration into seatback screens.
